Jump Starting Car Using EV

As an owner of a car, truck, or SUV, you’ve probably read or watched a video on how to jump-start a car. It’s a fairly straightforward process in Hollywood and elsewhere. If you’re concerned about jump-starting your car using an EV, don’t worry. The process of an EV jump-start is the same as jump-starting a car with a gasoline engine.

The reason you can jump-start a car with an EV is that, despite the large battery pack that powers the electric motor to move the car forward, all EVs still have a 12-volt, lead-acid battery in them to run accessories in the vehicle as you drive in Ft Lauderdale and beyond.

Keep reading to learn how you can jump-start a car with an EV and perform an EV jump-start with our guide from the team at William Lehman Van, Truck, and Bus Sales. It’s very easy to do!

Why Do EVs Have Standard 12-Volt Batteries in Them?

All EVs have standard batteries in them because of the power requirements of the vehicle. It takes a lot more power to move the electric motor than it does to run the AC, play the radio, and roll the windows up and down as you drive in Orlando and on your weekend getaways.

Can You Jump-Start a Car With an EV?

Yes, you can jump-start a car with an EV in Palm Beach and anywhere. You follow the same process as you would with a gasoline-powered car.

However, not all EVs recommend this process. So, if you’re the one driving an EV, read your owner’s manual first. If your vehicle does allow an EV jump-start, always use the 12-volt battery and not the main EV battery pack.

How to Perform an EV Jump-Start

  1. Park both vehicles close to each other so that the jumper cables can reach the jumping points easily.
  2. Make sure both cars are completely powered down.
  3. Locate the 12-volt batteries under the hoods of both vehicles.
  4. Find a pair of sturdy jumper cables.
  5. Connect one red clamp to the red terminal on the vehicle that won’t start.
  6. Connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal on the vehicle with the working battery.
  7. The black clamp on the jumper cable should now be attached to the negative terminal on the vehicle with the working battery.
  8. The final black clamp should be connected to an unpainted metal surface on the EV to ground the connection.
  9. Start the vehicle with a good battery.
  10. Then, start the gasoline-only car.
  11. Wait a few minutes while the gasoline-only car recharges its battery using the alternator.
  12. Shut off both cars.
  13. Disconnect the jumper cables.
  14. Be on your way!
